My personal and family history often brings to mind, especially at times like Passover, these quotes, which seem unfortunately to have remained pertinent far too long:
“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”
--------Martin Niemöller
This quote, attributed to the prominent German pastor Martin Niemöller, is sometimes mistakenly referred to as a poem (shown on Holocaust Museum website)
“There are many reasons for the fall of the German Republic. . . . But if you happen to meet abroad the men who occupied the decisive positions at decisive moments, you have your answer, you need seek no further for reasons for the collapse.”
----------Golo Mann, 1938; Reminiscences and Reflections: A Youth in Germany, (trans. Krishna Winston), W. W. Norton
Thank you for reminding us of the history that has already been. Unfortunately, it has become all too apparent that certain people need to "experience" things for themselves. Can I say, lacking wisdom is an epidemic and the lack of urgency to develop it has a very steep price.
